Solar Eclipse: DIY Pinhole Projector

One of the ways to watch the partial phases of a solar eclipse without protective glasses is with an indirect viewing method such as a pinhole projector. These are easy to make using a cardboard box, a sheet of white paper, aluminum foil, tape, and some scissors.

The pinhole projector works by allowing sunlight to stream in through a pinhole punched into aluminum foil that’s been taped over a hole in one of the box’s sides. This will project the crescent Sun onto a white sheet of paper taped on the inside of the other side of the box. Looking into the box through another hole will allow you to see the image that’s being projected.

We’ll be making some projectors to bring to the event for people to experiment with!

Materials will be provided free of charge by Concordia’s Centre for Creative Reuse.
